Enhancing Your Prints With Picture Frame Mats

Picture frame mats are used every day in enhancing the quality of images, from posters to family photos.

Mats are typically cut to an outside diameter that matches the frame while the inside diameter matches the picture that is being matted.

The inside is cut with a beveled edge going away from the picture, leaving a white edge against the image.

The mat is then laid over the picture, which it typically over laps slightly, and attached in place with museum quality paper adhesive that uses acid free glue.

This helps keep the image from being damaged over time. 

The mat and picture is then placed inside the frame against the glass and sealed.

It is important that you do not want the mat to overpower the image.

Too bright of a color, or too broad of a mat, and the mat will detract from the image, however, there is a trend in the interior design and decoration community that utilizes broader mats for small pictures.

You can typically purchase mats pre-cut to size, however, it is not always easy to find a frame the correct outer dimensions to fit.

It is most frequently best to have your mats custom cut.
